Oahu

We spent our only day in Honolulu visiting Pearl Harbor. USS Missouri was commissioned in 1944, served in the Pacific Theatre and hosted the surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945. She sits now in symbolic guard of the USS Arizona.

The visit to the USS Arizona Memorial was truly humbling. One can’t imagine the shock and horror experienced by those aboard that day. A very humbling day. So many lives lost for our freedom.

The 4,672-foot Admiral Clarey Bridge, aka the Ford Island Bridge, connects Ford Island at Pearl Harbor with Oahu. A 930 ft (280 m) section of it is supported by pontoons. The pontoons can be moved to allow vessels to pass through. This floating moveable span is the largest in the world. The bridge, opened in 1996, replaced a ferry operated by the Navy.
