St. John’s, Newfoundland

St. John’s is the capital and largest city of Newfoundland. It was first incorporated in 1888 and currently has a population of about 213,000.

Some fun facts about St. John’s:

  • It’s the oldest city in North America, with Water Street being the oldest street in North America.
  • John Cabot was the first to sail into the harbor, on June 24, 1497.
  • In 1901, the first trans-Atlantic radio signal was sent from England to St. John’s. The transmission was short, consisting of simply the Morse-code signal for the letter “s”.
  • In 1919, the first non-stop trans-Atlantic flight took off from here and landed in Ireland.
